I’ve only been on Crinkle Crags once, over ten years ago, and couldn’t remember them at all except for the “bad step”. This time I did it the other way round and managed to bypass the bad step without meaning to, but the walking along the top is brilliant. Very sunny all day, very cold with ice on the tops, tremendous views.
This route from the car park at the north end of Brothers water, just along from Hartsop, goes up a path to a pass between Dove Crag on the left (south) and Hart Crag on the right. As it ascends it goes through a narrowing that is often iced and banked up with deep snow, which can make a very nice ascent. You can then wander off leftwards up the steep slopes in good snow conditions and look for some simple adventures. In deep snow the path down from Hart Crag along the ridge is hard to find but the snow can in turn make plunge stepping down quite easy.
